Durometer
What is Durometer? You may have seen the word durometer and wondered what it meant. Durometer is a standardized way to measure the hardness of materials like rubber (elastomers) and plastics. In the world of rubber, we operate primarily in the Shore A Durometer scale. To give you an idea of what items match up with what durometer, here are some examples: In terms of Shore A: A gummy bear would be around 10 Durometer, a pencil eraser would be around 40 durometer, a ballistic block is around 60 durometer, a tire is around 70 durometer, and a skateboard wheel is around 95 durometer. Most plastics are Shore D. So, the skateboard wheel would probably be 50 durometer shore D, and a hardhat would be 80 durometer shore D. Durometer is a valuable tool for measuring the hardness of materials. By understanding what different values correspond to, you can better…
How to Glue Ballistic Rubber to a Surface
How to Glue Ballistic Rubber to Steel At CRS, we get a lot of questions about the best way to glue our ballistic rubber parts to a surface. The majority of customers will be gluing the material to steel, cement, or wood. While there are a few different methods that will work, we’ve found that Loctite PL is a glue that many of our customers have had success with. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a strong bond between rubber and steel. Method 1: If the glue you are using is having a difficult time bonding to the vulcanized rubber, try using a belt-type sander with 40 grit extremely coarse paper. Rapidly “grind” the back side of the rubber to create a scored surface for the adhesive to grip to. Apply polyurethane adhesive such as Loctite PL Premium 28 fl. oz. Polyurethane Construction Adhesive. Method 2: A second technique is…
The use of Ballistic Rubber
Ballistic rubber is a material used in the construction of live fire training facilities, such as those found in shooting ranges, military training facilities, and police training. It is made from rubber that has been specially formulated to be able to absorb the kinetic energy of a projectile and prevent ricochets.
